Michelin and ambition

La Distillerie inside Château de Bourglinster holds two Michelin stars and is the country's most serious hotel restaurant. Book the tasting menu (around €165) and stay upstairs to avoid the 40-minute drive back. Les Roses at Casino 2000 in Mondorf-les-Bains holds a star and pairs surprisingly well with the thermal-hotel next door if you sleep at Domaine Thermal instead.

In the capital, La Pomme Cannelle at Le Royal is the traditional grand-hotel restaurant — no Michelin star, but a reliable classical kitchen and a wine list that rewards curiosity. Sofitel Le Grand Ducal's Top Floor restaurant trades on the view over the Pétrusse valley more than the cooking, but it is worth one dinner for that view alone.

Honest hotel dining that overdelivers

Um Plateau in Clausen is not a hotel but its rooms above the restaurant make it a de facto pick if you want the food-first stay. Hôtel Parc Beaux-Arts in Ville Haute has a small restaurant that focuses on Luxembourgish produce and does one thing well. Hostellerie du Grünewald in Dommeldange is old-school in the best way — heavy sauces, thick carpets, faithful regulars.

Skip in-house dining at Ibis, Novotel and most Kirchberg chains. The food is fine but Kirchberg empties after 19:00 and you will eat better by taking the tram five stops into the centre. Save hotel restaurants for the ones where the kitchen is the draw.
