Clausen

Clausen is what happens when a defunct 19th-century brewery becomes a nightlife complex. Rives de Clausen — the courtyard on Rue Emile Mousel — packs eight or nine bars into old brick warehouses, and on Friday and Saturday nights the whole valley echoes with it. Beyond the party strip it's a normal residential neighborhood of steep streets and stone houses, with the Robert Schuman birthplace museum on Rue de Trèves. It suits people who want to be in the mix without paying Ville Haute prices.

Stay here if you want to drink late and stumble home in five minutes. Skip if you’re over the club scene — Sunday mornings the courtyard smells like spilled beer and cleaning bleach until 11am. It's also awkward for daytime sightseeing since the main sights are all uphill in Ville Haute; you’ll do the climb multiple times a day unless you take the bus.

Where to stay

Options are limited — a couple of small hotels around Rue de Trèves and Rue Laurent-Ménager, budget guesthouses from $110, mid-range around $150-190. Ask specifically for a room facing away from Rue Emile Mousel and Rue de Trèves' western end. Rue Laurent-Ménager and the streets climbing toward the plateau are quieter. The area is safe but streets are steep — heavy luggage plus cobblestones plus a 12% gradient is not fun.

Getting there

Bus 23 connects Clausen to Gare Centrale via Grund in 15 minutes and to Hamilius on the plateau in 8 minutes. From the airport, bus 16 to Hamilius then bus 23 down, about 35 minutes total. Walking to Ville Haute takes 12-15 minutes uphill via Montée de Clausen. Taxis from Rives de Clausen after 2am are hard to find on weekends — book ahead via the Webtaxi app.
