Moselle riverfront promenade in Remich with vineyards behind

Remich sits on the Moselle river, which forms the German border on the eastern side of the country. It's the informal capital of Luxembourg's small but serious wine region — about 42 km of vineyards producing mostly white wines (Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois) and the surprisingly good sparkling Crémant de Luxembourg. The Esplanade riverfront runs about a kilometer and is where the town concentrates its restaurants, cafés, and evening life. Boat trips down the Moselle depart in summer, and the wine cellars of St. Martin and Caves Bernard-Massard are open for tours.

Stay here if wine tourism is your goal, if you want a quieter river-based stay outside the capital, or if you’re driving through the region on a longer trip. Skip if you’re wine-indifferent — the town itself has limited non-wine attractions. September's Fête du Vin is worth timing a visit around. Winter months are very quiet, with many wine producers closed to visitors.

Where to stay

Around 8 hotels, mostly along Esplanade and Rue Enz. Expect $100-170. Hotel Saint-Nicolas and a couple of family-run inns dominate the mid-range. Rooms with Moselle views are the reason to stay — worth the premium. Avoid rooms on the Esplanade in summer without checking noise levels; the riverfront bars run until midnight most weekends. Book ahead for September and October wine season.

Getting there

No train to Remich — buses only. Bus 175 from Luxembourg City takes about 55 minutes, free, running every 30-60 minutes. Buses connect north along the Moselle to Grevenmacher and south to Schengen. From Findel airport, allow 90 minutes with transfer. Cars use the A1 east then N2 south — 30 minutes from the capital. Parking in Remich is easy and mostly free.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit multiple wineries in a day?

Yes, if you have a car or bike. Along the Moselle north and south of Remich there are 20+ producers, most within a 15-km stretch. Public transport works but slows you down; the Moselle bike path is the ideal option in good weather.

What's Crémant de Luxembourg like?

Similar to Champagne in production method — bottle-fermented, mostly Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, or Riesling base. Bottles typically $18-35 at the producer, often better than similarly priced Champagne. Serious quality for the price.
