Vianden

Vianden Castle above the Our river valley

Vianden is the tourist bullseye of northern Luxembourg. A restored medieval castle perches on a rock spur above the Our river; a compact village of stone houses stretches along Grand-Rue below; Victor Hugo lived in exile here in 1871 and his house is now a small museum. The chairlift up the eastern side offers valley views and there's a hydroelectric pumped-storage plant with a visitor center for the industrial-curious. In summer the village fills with day trippers from Luxembourg City and Belgium; October brings the medieval festival.

Stay overnight if you want the town after the day-trippers leave — evenings are magical, the castle is floodlit, and dinner tables become available. Skip if you’re allergic to obviously touristy places or if you’re visiting January-February when much of the town shuts. The best window is May-June or September, when weather cooperates and the crowds are manageable. Reserve rooms well ahead for July-August weekends.

Getting there

Bus 570 from Ettelbruck to Vianden runs roughly every 30-60 minutes, journey time 25 minutes, free. From Luxembourg City, train to Ettelbruck (25 min) then bus 570 (25 min) — total 60-75 minutes with transfer. From Findel airport, allow 2 hours total. No trains directly to Vianden. Cars use the N7 north from Ettelbruck. Village parking is limited in summer — arrive early or use the lots at the town entrance.
