Diekirch is a step up from Ettelbruck for atmosphere. It's smaller (around 7,000 people), tighter around a walkable center, and sits directly on the Sûre with river paths that lead into the Müllerthal region. The National Military History Museum here is one of the best WWII museums in Europe — full-scale dioramas of the Battle of the Bulge, indoor tanks, comprehensive artifact collection. The Diekirch brewery is the country's biggest, though the brewery visit itself is limited. Roman mosaics under the church add another layer.

Stay here if you want an Ardennes base with real character, if the Military History Museum is on your list, or if you’re using it as a launching point for Müllerthal (Little Switzerland) hikes. Skip if you want serious nightlife or shopping — the center has essentially one pedestrianized street and empties out by 9pm. Trains to Luxembourg City require a change at Ettelbruck, total journey 35-40 minutes.

Around five hotels, including the Hôtel du Parc and small independents around the center. Expect $95-160. The area near the pedestrian Grand-Rue and Place Guillaume is central and walkable. Rooms with a Sûre view are worth the modest premium. Avoid the couple of budget options on the outskirts unless you have a car. Weekends can fill up in summer during Müllerthal hiking season.

Getting there

Trains from Luxembourg City require a change at Ettelbruck — total journey 35-40 minutes, free. Buses to Vianden (bus 570) take about 25 minutes. From Findel airport, no direct link — allow 90 minutes with transfers via Luxembourg City. Within Diekirch everything worth seeing is walkable within 15 minutes. Rental cars are useful for reaching Müllerthal hiking trailheads.

Not directly — Müllerthal proper starts around Beaufort and Berdorf, about 20 minutes south by car or bus. Diekirch is a good base for driving to trailheads. For hikes without a car, Echternach is a better base.
