Ettelbruck is where the country's north effectively begins. It sits at the confluence of the Alzette, Wark, and Sûre rivers and is the main rail junction between Luxembourg City and the Ardennes. The town itself is functional rather than beautiful — a pedestrianized main street with cafés, a Saturday market, and the General Patton Memorial Museum commemorating the American general who liberated the area in WWII (his tomb is at the US military cemetery near Luxembourg City). Population around 9,000.

Stay here if you’re touring the Ardennes and want a rail-connected base cheaper than Diekirch or Vianden. Skip if you want dramatic castles or river gorges at your door — Ettelbruck is a transport town, not a scenic one. Trains to Luxembourg City run every 20-30 minutes and take about 25 minutes; connecting trains to Diekirch and buses to Vianden and Clervaux fan out from the station.

Where to stay

Around six hotels, mostly on Grand-Rue and Avenue J.F. Kennedy near the station. Expect $90-150. The Central Hotel and a couple of independents cover most needs. Rooms near the station are practical but can catch train yard noise; ask specifically. Grand-Rue in the pedestrian center is the most atmospheric location. Sunday mornings are dead — plan food shopping in advance.

Getting there

Ettelbruck is the north's main rail hub. Trains to Luxembourg City every 20-30 minutes, 25-minute journey, free. Local train to Diekirch takes 8 minutes. Bus 100 runs to Vianden (25 min) and other buses reach Clervaux and the Upper Sûre valley. From Findel airport, no direct link — via Luxembourg City station, allow 90 minutes total. Buses within Ettelbruck are free and cover most of the town.
