The serious wellness picks

Le Royal on Boulevard Royal remains the benchmark inside Ville Haute: a 16-metre pool, sauna, hammam and treatment rooms that see steady business from EU diplomats. It is not cheap (rooms from around €280) but the spa is open until 22:00 and included in the rate. Sofitel Luxembourg Le Grand Ducal in Gare has a smaller top-floor spa with the city's best skyline sauna window — worth requesting a treatment slot at dusk.

In Mondorf-les-Bains, the Domaine Thermal is the real thermal deal in the country. Its hotel wings (Villa Louvigny and Hôtel du Parc) give guests direct access to the thermal baths fed by 24°C mineral water. If you actually want to soak for a day, this is the only address that makes sense — the city hotels are wellness rooms, not thermal ones.

City spas worth the room rate

Mélia Luxembourg in Kirchberg has a compact YHI Spa with a decent sauna and steam room, useful if you are already there for a Philharmonie concert. Hôtel Parc Belair in Belair is quieter and has an indoor pool plus sauna that few guests use midweek — a good pick for solo travellers who want space. Novotel Kirchberg's pool is fine for a swim but the spa is minimal; book elsewhere if that is the priority.

Skip the boutique hotels in Grund and Clausen for spa purposes — the historic buildings simply do not have the footprint. If wellness is central to your trip, choose Mondorf or Le Royal and treat the old town as a day out.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Mondorf thermal water actually warm?

The source is 24°C, but the pools are heated to 30-36°C depending on the basin. The outdoor thermal pool stays usable year-round.

Do city hotel spas charge extra for guests?

Le Royal and Sofitel include the spa in the room rate. Mélia and Novotel include pool and sauna; treatments are always extra and should be booked ahead.
