Grund sits 70 meters below the plateau, wedged between cliffs and the Alzette river. The Neumünster Abbey is now a cultural center with a great free courtyard, and Rives de Clausen next door is the loudest bar strip in the country on Friday nights. Weekdays it's a village — kids playing football by the river, old men on benches. The trick to Grund is timing: come for lunch on a Wednesday, or drinks after 10pm on a Saturday, but not both.

Stay here if you want river walks and a village feel five minutes from the old town. Skip if you dislike stairs — climbing back up to Ville Haute is either the free Pfaffenthal lift (closes around midnight) or 180 steps. Some Airbnbs advertise 'Grund location' when they’re actually in Clausen — check the exact street before booking, they’re a 15-minute walk apart via the abbey.

Where to stay

The pickings are thin — maybe six real hotels including the Hôtel Parc Beaux-Arts and a handful of guesthouses on Rue Plaetis and Rue Munster. Expect $160-240 a night. Avoid anything directly facing Rives de Clausen on weekends unless you sleep with earplugs — the music from Melusina and Verso goes until 3am Friday and Saturday. Rue Sosthène Weis is quieter and still five minutes from the abbey.

Getting there

From Gare Centrale, bus 23 runs to Rue Münster in Grund in about 10 minutes, or walk to the Pfaffenthal lift via Ville Haute (20 minutes total). From the airport, bus 16 to Hamilius then either the lift or a downhill 10-minute walk via the abbey stairs. Once in Grund everything is walkable but expect stairs — every route back up to the plateau involves climbing.

Is Grund safe at night?

Yes, very. Rives de Clausen on weekend nights is loud but well-policed — the crowd is students and young professionals, not aggressive. Solo walkers along the river path after 2am is fine but bring a phone with a light for the stairs.
