Pfaffenthal

Pfaffenthal is the sleeper. Everyone crosses over it on the Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte (the Red Bridge) without knowing there's a full working neighborhood 85 meters below. It's the oldest continuously inhabited part of the city — a strip of houses along the Alzette between Grund and Weimerskirch, plus the Vauban Towers, an old fort, and a small city history museum. The panoramic lift dumps you here in 30 seconds from the plateau. On a Sunday morning it feels like a village of 400 people.

Stay here if you value quiet and don’t need shops. There's essentially one street, Rue Vauban / Rue Mohrfels, one bakery, one small hotel, and a lot of birdsong. Skip if you want restaurants at your door — you’ll walk to Grund or take the lift to Ville Haute for anything beyond coffee. Terrible for anyone who dislikes vertical topography; the surrounding cliffs mean every exit involves stairs or a lift.

Where to stay

Choices are very limited — a small hotel or two on Rue Vauban and vacation rentals in old worker's houses. Expect $110-170 a night. The Vauban Towers museum area is the quietest stretch. Avoid rooms directly under the Red Bridge; while the bridge is high enough that noise is minimal, tram noise carries at night. This is a walkers' and photographers' base, not a shopper's or nightlife-goer's.

Getting there

The panoramic lift from Plateau du Saint-Esprit is your main link to the city — free, fast, 5:45am-1am. Bus 9 also connects Pfaffenthal to Hamilius. The Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg funicular runs from the north end of Pfaffenthal up to Kirchberg every 3 minutes — free, 60 seconds, connects to tram T1. From the airport, bus 16 to Hamilius then lift down, about 30 minutes.
