Gare is the practical choice. Avenue de la Gare and Avenue de la Liberté funnel travelers between the station and the old town via the Pont Adolphe. It's the most diverse part of the city — Portuguese cafés, Turkish kebab joints, halal butchers on Rue de Strasbourg — and the cheapest hotels are here, mostly clustered along Rue Joseph Junck and Place de Paris. The neighborhood had a rough patch with drugs and petty crime around the station's north side; the city has poured resources into cleanup and it's noticeably better since 2022.

Stay here if budget matters, if you’re arriving late by train, or if you want an actual multicultural neighborhood rather than a museum piece. Skip if you’re precious about aesthetics or if street noise bothers you — Avenue de la Gare is a bus corridor and starts at 5:30am. The area right north of the station between Rue Joseph Junck and Rue de Bonnevoie is where the sketch factor is highest; a block south or west and it's fine.

Where to stay

Cheap end starts around $75 on Rue Joseph Junck and Rue du Fort Neipperg — expect basic, sometimes dated. Mid-range $120-180 on Avenue de la Liberté (Mercure, Ibis, Park Inn). The Hôtel Français and Alvisse Parc Hotel are solid choices. Avoid the very cheapest places on Rue de Strasbourg unless you’ve read recent reviews carefully. Rooms facing Avenue de la Gare — noisy. Rooms on Rue du Fort Wallis or Rue Origer — much quieter.

Getting there

Gare Centrale is the transport heart of the country. Direct trains to Trier (Germany, 50 min), Metz and Nancy (France), Brussels (2h50), plus every domestic line. Tram T1 to Hamilius (8 min) and Kirchberg (16 min). Bus 16 to the airport (25 min). Almost every city bus passes through the station forecourt. Walking to Ville Haute is 15 minutes uphill via Pont Adolphe.

Is Gare safe at night?

Mostly yes, with caveats. The station forecourt has visible police presence and is fine. Avoid the very narrow blocks around Rue Joseph Junck and the north end of Rue de Strasbourg late at night if walking alone. A block south into Bonnevoie and it's completely normal.

How early do restaurants open in Gare?

Most cafés open by 7am for coffee and pastries — the Portuguese places on Rue de Strasbourg are earliest. Full restaurants typically don’t open until noon. Hotel breakfasts are your best bet before 8am.
