Echternach is the country's oldest town — founded as a monastery by the Anglo-Saxon missionary St. Willibrord in 698. The Benedictine abbey and its basilica dominate the center; the old town spreads around Place du Marché with an arcaded medieval market hall. The Sûre river forms the German border and you can walk across the bridge into Germany in five minutes. But the real draw is the Müllerthal — 'Little Switzerland' — with sandstone rock formations, gorges, and beech forests immediately west of town, laced with excellent marked hiking trails.

Stay here if hiking is your priority — trailheads are within walking distance of the abbey, and this is the best public-transport hiking base in the country. Skip if you want a bigger urban experience — Echternach is a small town (population 5,000) that empties on winter weekdays. The Echternach dancing procession on Whit Tuesday (Pentecost) is a UNESCO cultural heritage event, spectacular but crowded.

Around 10 hotels, from small guesthouses on Rue de la Gare and Rue André Duchscher to the Bel-Air Hotel and the atmospheric Hôtel de la Basilique on Place du Marché. Expect $100-180. Rooms with abbey or Sûre views justify the premium. Book well ahead for Pentecost (procession weekend), and for May-September weekends generally. Some smaller places close January-February.

Getting there

No train to Echternach — buses only. Bus 110 from Luxembourg City takes about 55 minutes, running every 30-60 minutes, free. Bus 500 from Ettelbruck takes about 35 minutes. From Findel airport, allow 90 minutes total via a Luxembourg City transfer. Within Echternach everything is walkable within 15 minutes. Buses to Müllerthal trailheads (Berdorf, Beaufort) run several times daily.

For public transport travelers, yes — trailheads are walkable from the abbey and buses connect other trailheads. For drivers, small villages like Berdorf or Beaufort are closer to trail networks but have very limited accommodation.

How does the dancing procession work?

Whit Tuesday morning, thousands of pilgrims dance from the Sauer bridge through town to the basilica in a hop-forward step to hymn music. Starts around 9am, lasts 3-4 hours, streets closed. Very crowded — arrive early, book hotel far ahead.
