The serious aparthotels
Adagio Luxembourg City (€134 a night for a one-bedroom) on Boulevard d\'Avranches is the obvious pick: full kitchen, washing machine, five minutes\' walk to Gare station. Staybridge Suites at the airport (€147) has bigger units if you have a car. Domus Aparthotel in Bonnevoie (€113) is the value option — small kitchens, quiet residential street, 15 minutes\' walk to the Old Town.
Hotels with kitchenettes rather than full apartments
Melia Luxembourg has junior suites with kitchenettes (€191). Hotel Français in Place d\'Armes offers a handful of long-stay rooms with fridges and hotplates (€139). For a rural stay, gîtes in Vianden, Echternach and Bourscheid rent full houses for €95-€156 a night — better value than any hotel if you\'re four people. Try the national gîte network for anything called \'Gîte Rural\'.
Where to shop
Cactus and Delhaize are the two supermarket chains you\'ll see everywhere. There\'s a Cactus in Kirchberg (Auchan mall) and a Delhaize on Rue de Bonnevoie. For actual good produce, the Wednesday and Saturday farmers\' market at Place Guillaume II is a highlight — cheese, charcuterie, Moselle wine at fair prices.

Are supermarkets open Sundays?
Mostly no. A few Cactus Shoppi branches open Sunday mornings; the airport supermarket opens daily. Plan Saturday shops.
Can I do laundry?
Most aparthotels include washing machines. Public launderettes exist but are rare — Bonnevoie has one on Rue de Bonnevoie.

A kitchenette is worth the money from about three nights, and clearly worth it from five. Breakfast out runs €12–€18 a head and a simple dinner €24–€39, so a family of four cooking breakfast and half its dinners saves a serious part of the room rate. On a two-night city break you will probably eat out anyway — in that case book a normal room and put the difference into a better location.
What to check before you book
“Kitchenette” covers a lot of ground. Look for a hob with at least two rings, a fridge with a proper freezer compartment, and a sink that is not the bathroom basin. Check whether there is a microwave and, for longer stays, whether the room has a washing machine. Also confirm the cleaning rhythm: aparthotels often clean weekly rather than daily, which is fine but worth knowing.
Doing the shopping
Large supermarkets sit around the Gare district and in Kirchberg, and most stay open late on weekdays; Sunday opening is limited, so shop on Saturday. Markets and smaller groceries are easier on foot in the old town. If you arrive by train, buy basics before checking in rather than carrying bags up and down the valleys.
Where kitchenettes fit in the city
Aparthotels cluster around Boulevard d’Avranches near the station and out towards the airport, because those buildings are newer and easier to run with self-catering guests. Staying there usually means a short tram or bus ride into the old town — free, and quick. If your priority is walking out of the door into the old quarters, expect to pay more for smaller units.
A realistic budget for a self-catering stay
Assume €30–€45 a day for groceries for two people cooking breakfast and one meal in, plus coffee out. That is roughly half of what the same days cost in restaurants. Add a small margin for the first shop, which is always the expensive one, and check the apartment’s deposit and cleaning fee before you compare total prices rather than nightly rates.
