Candlelit hotel room with a view over Luxembourg's old town

Candlelit hotel room with a view over Luxembourg's old town

For the view

Sofitel Luxembourg Le Grand Ducal has the best window in the country: floor-to-ceiling glass over the Pétrusse valley and the Bock. Ask for a room on the seventh floor or higher, valley-facing. Hôtel Parc Beaux-Arts in Ville Haute has just 11 suites in a converted 18th-century building two doors from the Grand Ducal Palace — the quietest luxury address in the old town.

In Grund, Hôtel Simoncini's sister property Le Place d’Armes sits on the eponymous square with a small courtyard restaurant that fills up at dusk. Not a view hotel, but the atmosphere is unbeatable on a summer evening.

For the escape

Château d’Urspelt in the Ardennes is the anniversary pick — 90 minutes from the airport, a spa on site, and forest walks straight out the door. Hôtel Belle-Vue in Vianden puts you under the illuminated castle at night for around €130 a room. Domaine Thermal Mondorf works if the romance you want involves matching bathrobes and hot mineral water.

Skip the Kirchberg chains and anything near the Gare for a romantic stay — the atmosphere works against you. The Gare specifically gets rough in patches after dark and the last thing you want is to walk your partner back past that. Pay the extra €50 and stay in Ville Haute or a country property instead.

Frequently asked questions

Which hotel is best for a proposal?

Sofitel Le Grand Ducal's Top Floor bar at sunset is the safe answer — book a valley-view window seat. Bourglinster's castle terrace works in warmer months.

Any hotel with in-room hot tubs?

The junior suites at Domaine Thermal Mondorf have private balconies with thermal tubs. It is the only address in the country offering this as standard.
