Extensive stone walls and towers of Bourscheid Castle on a ridge above the Sûre valley

Bourscheid is the largest fortified site in Luxembourg by surface area, wrapping over 12,000 square metres of ridge-top with a full outer curtain wall and eight defensive towers. First mentioned in a 10th-century Frankish charter, it grew in stages until the 14th century when the Stolzembourg residence was built inside the walls. Abandoned after 1802, it fell into ruin and was bought by the state in 1972; consolidation and partial restoration have made it safe to walk.

Unlike Vianden it is not a fully furnished castle but an evocative shell, and that is the point: you climb the towers, walk the ramparts and get 360-degree views over the Sûre, Wark and Wëltz valleys with almost nothing between you and the drop. The small museum in the Stolzembourg house explains the archaeology. There is no chairlift; either drive to the car park by the outer gate, or walk 25 minutes up from Bourscheid-Moulin in the valley.

Are there any free entry days?

Entry is free with the LuxembourgCard and on European Heritage Days (usually second weekend of September).

How long does the visit take?

Allow 90 minutes to 2 hours to walk the ramparts, climb the towers and read the museum panels.

When is the castle closed?

Closed on 24 and 25 December and 1 January. Winter hours (11:00-16:00) apply from November through March.

Do I need to book?

No advance booking is needed; tickets are sold at the gatehouse. The site rarely queues even in summer.

How do I reach it by bus?

Take a train to Ettelbruck then bus 545 towards Wiltz, getting off at Bourscheid, Buurschterhaff. It is a signposted 15-minute uphill walk to the castle gate.
