Larochette (Fels in Luxembourgish) is a very old fortified site: 11th-century foundations, expanded by several noble families in the 14th century into two distinct manor houses on the same spur, Créhange and Hombourg. A fire in 1565 destroyed the residential quarters and neither family bothered rebuilding. Today the sandstone walls stand roofless, giving cutaway views into vaulted cellars, hearths and privy shafts.
The site is small and admission is one of the cheapest in the country, which makes it a good pause on the road to Vianden or Echternach. From the ticket booth a short path climbs to the two manor houses; you can walk between them and peer over the low ramparts into the town square below. Bring a snack for the little terrace behind the Créhange house, which catches the afternoon sun. The nearby town has a couple of cafés and the Nommerlayen sandstone cliffs are a 20-minute drive away.

How much time do I need?
About 45-60 minutes is plenty. The site is compact and mostly outdoors.
When is the castle closed?
Closed on 25 December. From November to March it opens only on weekends 10:00-16:00, and closes entirely if snow makes the paths unsafe.
Do I need to book?
No. Tickets are sold at a small booth by the entrance and there are essentially never queues.
Which bus stops closest?
Bus 100 (Luxembourg City to Diekirch) stops at Larochette, Bleech in the town square. From there it is a 10-minute walk up Rue de Medernach.
