Inscribed by UNESCO in 1994, the old quarters and fortifications of Luxembourg City are less a single monument than an entire urban landscape. The site strings together the upper town on the sandstone plateau, the Wenzel and Vauban walls, the Bock promontory and the deep Alzette valley 70 metres below. Roughly 17 kilometres of the original fortress belt survive, along with 23 kilometres of underground casemates carved into the rock by successive Spanish, French, Austrian and Prussian garrisons.
Treat it as a walking circuit rather than a ticketed attraction. Start on Place de la Constitution for the Gëlle Fra viewpoint, follow the Chemin de la Corniche (often called the most beautiful balcony in Europe) around to the Bock, then drop down to Grund via the free panoramic elevator at Pfaffenthal. Wear proper shoes: cobbles are slick after rain, and you will climb roughly 200 steps in total.

How much does it cost to visit the fortifications?
Walking the ramparts, viewpoints and old quarters is completely free. Only ticketed sub-sites like the Bock Casemates ($8) charge admission.
Are there free hours?
The entire outdoor circuit is free 24 hours a day, all year. The Pfaffenthal panoramic lift is also free from 05:45 to 01:00 daily.
How long do I need?
Plan on four to five hours for the full UNESCO circuit including Ville Haute, the Bock, Grund and Pfaffenthal. A quick highlights loop can be done in about two hours.
Is anything closed on Mondays?
The outdoor site never closes. The Lëtzebuerg City Museum visitor centre is closed on Mondays; the Bock Casemates close from November through March.
Do I need to book in advance?
No booking is needed for the outdoor walks. Only the paid casemates require timed tickets in summer, bookable at visitluxembourg.com.
What is the nearest bus stop?
Bus stop Badanster on Boulevard Roosevelt drops you 200 m from Place de la Constitution and the start of the Corniche walk.
