Mondorf-les-Bains is Luxembourg's spa town in the far south-east, and the right month changes what you can actually do there.

Best Time to Visit Mondorf-les-Bains: A Month-by-Month Guide

Spring: Cheaper Rooms and the Park at Its Best

March and April are quiet in Mondorf-les-Bains. Daytime temperatures sit around 8–14°C, the spa park behind the Casino 2000 fills with blossom, and hotel rates in the town run well below summer levels because demand is low. The Moselle vineyards around Remich, eight kilometres east, are bare but the roads are empty and the drive from Luxembourg City takes about 25 minutes via the A3 and N13. Bring a rain jacket; April showers are frequent and the town's covered arcades along Avenue des Bains are not extensive.

May is the month I would book first. Temperatures climb to 17–21°C, the outdoor pool and the wooded walking trails toward Ellange open up, and the season has not yet hit peak. It is also when Luxembourg's public holidays (Europe Day on 9 May, Ascension) create long weekends, so reserve three to four weeks ahead if you want a spa-facing room. Weekday stays are noticeably cheaper than Friday and Saturday.

Summer: Warm, Busy, and Best for the Moselle

July and August bring 23–26°C days, which is ideal for the thermal baths and the open-air pools, but Mondorf-les-Bains is small and fills up. Rooms near the Casino 2000 and the Avenue des Bains command the highest rates of the year, often double the March level. If you are combining the spa with the Moselle wine route, base yourself in Mondorf and drive to Remich, Wormeldange or Grevenmacher in 15–30 minutes; the Schengen border crossing is 6 km away, so a day trip into Germany or France is simple.

Be aware that August is Luxembourg's main holiday month, so restaurants in town can be fully booked and the spa gets crowded on weekends. The trade-off is long daylight until around 21:30 and the best weather for the cycle path along the Moselle. Book at least a month ahead and consider Sunday-to-Thursday stays for better availability.

Autumn: The Sweet Spot for Spa Breaks

September and early October are, in my view, the best-value window of the year. Temperatures ease to 15–20°C, the Moselle grape harvest is underway around Remich and Stadtbredimus, and hotel prices drop back toward spring levels while the weather stays dependable. The spa itself is at its most enjoyable when the air outside is cool. Late September also brings the quieter post-summer rhythm: fewer coach groups, easier parking, and shorter waits at the thermal baths.

From mid-October, rain becomes more frequent and the vineyards turn gold, which suits walkers more than swimmers. November is the dampest, greyest month and the least appealing for a spa town visit unless you are purely there for the indoor pools. If you want autumn colour without the wet, aim for the first two weeks of October.

Winter: Thermal Baths, Christmas Markets and Low Rates

December through February is cold, around 2–6°C, with occasional snow. This is genuinely the cheapest time to stay in Mondorf-les-Bains, and the thermal baths are at their most appealing when it is freezing outside. The Luxembourg City Christmas market in Place d'Armes and Knuedler is 25 minutes by car or a direct train from Bettembourg, which is 6 km from Mondorf. If you are booking a bargain spa weekend, January after the New Year week is the quietest and least expensive period.

Skip Mondorf in late November if you want outdoor activity; the park is muddy and many terraces are closed. February half-term brings a small uptick in family bookings, so book two weeks out. Whatever the month, check whether your hotel includes spa access, as day passes bought separately add to the total.

Good to know

Questions, answered

What is the cheapest month to stay in Mondorf-les-Bains?

January and February are consistently the lowest-demand months, followed by March and late November. Rates roughly halve compared with July and August. Book two to three weeks ahead for the best weekday deals, and check whether spa entry is included.

When is the best weather for the thermal baths?

May, June and September offer the most comfortable conditions, with daytime temperatures of 17–22°C. The baths are enjoyable year-round, but outdoor pools and the spa park are at their best from late May through September.

How do I get to Mondorf-les-Bains without a car?

Regional buses connect Mondorf to Luxembourg City and Bettembourg, where you can pick up the train. The drive from Luxembourg City is about 25 minutes via the A3. A car makes the Moselle vineyards and the Schengen border area far easier to reach.
