The most atmospheric neighbourhood
Grund sits at the bottom of the cliffs, along a bend of the Alzette. You reach it by the free Pfaffenthal panoramic lift from Ville Haute (running until midnight) or by walking down Montée du Grund. The neighbourhood is essentially one street of stone houses, an abbey, and about a dozen bars and restaurants. At night, the lit casemates above you feel unreal.

La Pipistrelle (€208) is the only real hotel — five suites, book six weeks ahead. Otherwise, base in Ville Haute and eat in Grund. Mousel\'s Cantine does hearty Luxembourgish (Bouneschlupp bean soup, €10) in a former brewery. Scott\'s Pub is the expat institution. For serious dining, Ma Langue Sourit and Um Plateau, though the latter is technically up the hill. On weekends the strip fills with 20-somethings until 3am — pick your room accordingly.

The Grund is a neighbourhood you use rather than tick off, so the best plan is to sleep elsewhere and come down here for meals and evenings. A sensible rhythm: breakfast up in Ville Haute, a morning on the fortifications and the Chemin de la Corniche, then lunch in the Grund when the terraces are still quiet.
Getting down and back up
Two ways down: the free Pfaffenthal panoramic lift from Ville Haute (it runs until around midnight), or the walk down Montée du Grund, which takes about ten minutes and ends right on the riverside. Both are free. The walk back up is the only part that asks anything of you — it is steep, so plan the climb for after dinner and take it slowly.
What is worth your time nearby
The abbey of Neumünster is the cultural centre of the valley and hosts concerts and exhibitions, often free to enter during the day. Above you, the Bock casemates and the old town are a short climb away. Everything in the valley itself — the stone houses, the river bend, the bridges — is seen on foot, so no transport is needed once you are down there.
Where to stay if you want the Grund at night
The neighbourhood has very few beds: La Pipistrelle is the only real hotel and books out weeks ahead. Most visitors base themselves in Ville Haute or the Gare district and walk or ride down for the evening. If your dates are fixed and the valley hotels are full, staying one stop away and walking in costs nothing extra.
Practical notes
Cobbled lanes and a slope down: flat shoes beat anything with a heel. Book dinner tables for Friday and Saturday, when the riverside fills up. On wet days the terraces close but the bars stay open, and the walk down is the same. If you are travelling with luggage, come down without it — check in first, then walk.
