Is Luxembourg safe? An honest answer for 2026
5 min read
Luxembourg City street at night
The reality
Luxembourg City has around 130,000 residents and a violent crime rate near the bottom of European rankings. Pickpocketing exists around the station and on tram 1 during rush hour, but at nowhere near Paris or Barcelona levels. Solo female travel, night walks in Ville Haute, walking home from Grund at midnight — all normal, safe, unremarkable. The Chemin de la Corniche and Place d’Armes are policed and busy well past midnight in summer.
The two caveats
First: the immediate area outside the Gare (Rue de Strasbourg, Rue Joseph Junck) has an open drug scene that has visibly worsened in recent years. Walk briskly, don’t linger, and it's a non-issue. Second: Luxembourg drivers are aggressive on marked crossings — several accidents involve tourists assuming European pedestrian priority. Look twice. Otherwise this is one of the calmest capitals you’ll ever visit.
Frequently asked questions

Yes — trams and trains are well-lit, cameraed, and used late by locals.
Are there areas to avoid?
Only the immediate blocks north of the station after midnight, and even then it's uncomfortable rather than dangerous.
