Lëtzebuerg City Museum tells the story of the capital across 10 centuries, from Count Siegfried's 963 exchange of land that founded the city to the present-day banking metropolis. It occupies four historic townhouses on Rue du Saint-Esprit whose interiors have been connected by a giant glass lift that runs through solid rock down to the bedrock of the Bock plateau. The permanent route runs chronologically from the fifth floor to the ground: medieval origins, Burgundian and Habsburg periods, the fortress centuries, industrialisation, war and occupation, post-war Europeanisation, and contemporary immigration and banking. Interactive maps show the changing city plan over time, and a large-scale model of the 18th-century fortress at its zenith is the most memorable single object. On the lowest levels the fabric of the house becomes the exhibit: vaulted cellars cut straight into the sandstone, with the rock face left bare.
