3-star hotels in Limpertsberg

A shortlist of 3-star places to stay in Limpertsberg, the leafy residential plateau north of Luxembourg's old town, for return visitors, conference delegates, academics and families who want quiet streets, good local food and a tram into Ville Haute.

9 hotels

Staying in Limpertsberg

Limpertsberg sits on the plateau just north of Ville Haute, mostly early-20th-century townhouses and wide leafy avenues, with the Grand Théâtre on Rond-point Schuman and the old University of Luxembourg campus. Avenue de la Faïencerie is the main artery: neighbourhood bistros, wine bars and the Marx bookshop-cafe. Restaurants like Um Plateau and Come Prima hum until around 11pm, then the streets empty; this is where mid-career expats live.

The hotels on this list sit on and around that artery and its side streets — Rue Des Roses, Rue Frantz Seimetz, Rue Evrard Ketten, Avenue Pasteur, Avenue de la Faïencerie, Rue Ermesinde and Rue Jean L'aveugle — all within the plateau, and the T1 runs down Avenue Pasteur to Hamilius in 5 minutes. It suits couples and families who want calm pavements and dinner on foot, business travellers avoiding Kirchberg's glass towers, and anyone treating Limpertsberg as a base rather than a tourist zone.

Avenue Pasteur

The T1 tram runs down Avenue Pasteur to Hamilius in 5 minutes, which makes this the most convenient address on the list for the old town. Rue Des Roses

Two of the listed apartments share this address, both with kitchens, dishwasher, desk and free WiFi. It's a residential street on the plateau, within the calm, tree-lined grid that makes Limpertsberg feel European-bourgeois in the good way, and handy for the bistros around the Faïencerie.

Plan your stay

Getting there and around

From the Théâtre stop, walk south down Avenue de la Faïencerie past the Marx bookshop-cafe and the bistro cluster around Um Plateau, cross Boulevard Robert Schuman at the Rond-point Schuman by the Grand Théâtre, and descend into Ville Haute via Rue Notre-Dame, emerging by the cathedral's twin spires: about 30 minutes, mostly flat. Getting to Ville Haute is 10-15 minutes flat across the Rond-point Schuman, and the tram is faster if you're tired. The T1 runs down Avenue Pasteur to Hamilius in 5 minutes, and the tram is free.

When to go

The Glacis, at the plateau's northern edge, hosts the Schueberfouer for three weeks each end of August into September — one of Europe's oldest funfairs — and some Saturdays bring a car-boot and antiques market to the same gravel. Outside those dates it's a car park and dog-walking field. Late August and early September are the liveliest time to be on the plateau; otherwise Limpertsberg is a quiet residential quarter best enjoyed on its own calmer terms.
