The area has a reputation for being sketchy, and parts of it are: some blocks around Rue Joseph Junck show visible drug use and sex work, especially after dark, though violent incidents are rare. The main streets, Avenue de la Liberté and Rue du Fort Neipperg, are fine. Skip Gare if you are travelling with kids and easily unsettled; choose it for budget, good ethnic food, and a two-minute tram to the old town. Couples and short-break visitors who value the free tram and the 20-minute walk to the centre across the Passerelle will find the most choice here.
