Dudelange sits at the southeast corner of the country, 4 km from the French border. Population around 21,000, once dominated by steelmaking like Esch and Differdange, now a residential and small-industry town with a decent center around Place de l’Hôtel de Ville. The Centre National de l’Audiovisuel (CNA) is a national-scale photography and film archive with rotating exhibitions — an unexpected cultural anchor for a town this size. Waldhof forest at the eastern edge offers walking trails.

Stay here if you’re heading south into France (Metz is 30 minutes by car), if you want the country's best photography museum on your doorstep, or if you need cheaper rooms and don’t mind train commutes. Skip for the capital's old town experience — Dudelange is a working southern town without a heritage streetscape. Trains to Luxembourg City run every 30 minutes and take about 20 minutes.

Where to stay

Around five hotels, generally on Avenue Grande-Duchesse Charlotte and near the station. Expect $85-140. The area around Place de l’Hôtel de Ville is central and walkable. Avoid anything advertising 'near the industrial estate' unless the price is extremely good and you don’t mind the visual. Weekend rates often drop as business travel is minimal.

Getting there

Trains from Luxembourg City to Dudelange-Centre or Dudelange-Ville run every 30 minutes, journey time 20-25 minutes, free. Buses connect within Dudelange and to nearby communes. From Findel airport, no direct link — via Luxembourg City. Cars use the A3 to the French border and A13 for east-west movement. Parking is easy and mostly free.
