Merl

Merl is essentially defined by its park. The Parc de Merl covers a huge western wedge of the city, with playgrounds, a small pond, running trails, and thick woodland toward the Bertrange side. The neighborhood around it is 1950s-1980s residential — apartment blocks, low-slung shopping streets on Rue de Merl and Rue du X Octobre, and a Cactus supermarket that anchors weekly shopping. There's almost no visitor infrastructure here in the tourist sense, but families with kids find it convenient.

Stay here if you’re on a family trip with children under 10 who want park access, or if you’re renting a car and want easy driving in and out of the city. Skip for a short cultural visit — you’ll spend more time commuting to the sights than seeing them. Restaurants are limited to neighborhood bistros and a couple of pizzerias. Evenings are silent.

Where to stay

A very small hotel selection — perhaps four hotels including one or two mid-range business options on Route de Longwy and Rue de Merl. Expect $105-160 a night. Apartments and vacation rentals are much more common than hotels. Look for anything within 5 minutes' walk of Parc de Merl entrances if traveling with kids. Avoid rooms directly on Route de Longwy — heavy traffic corridor to the west of the country.

Getting there

Buses 12 and 22 connect Merl to Hamilius in 12-15 minutes and to Gare Centrale in about 20 minutes. From the airport, bus 16 to Hamilius then transfer, about 45 minutes total. No tram service; the T1 extension southwest is planned but not yet built. Driving is easy — Merl is where suburban traffic meets the city center and parking is available, though not free.
